It has been years that Apple Inc. is the domineering producer of media
players such as iPods. Many competitors rose for the past years to challenge this portable device and have their
own places in the market. But still iPod produced by Apple Inc. overcome these newly-out-of-the-market contenders
like Creative Zen and the SanDisk Sansa.
Today’s Apple Inc.’s recent or hot competitor is Microsoft that released its
iPod version called the Zune. Browsing through the pages of the web, you can locate hundreds of articles
discussing and comparing the two gadgets. The question is if it iPod will retain its place in the market
or Zune will the breakthrough of Microsoft in the hardware sales?
Due to this dilemma of iPod vs Zune, we will evaluate which is which; we
will assess these two media players produced by Apple and Microsoft respectively.
Features iPod vs Zune:
The main advance of Zune over iPod is the WiFi-based sharing of songs and digital photos
wirelessly between two or more nearby Zunes. There’s also an integrated FM radio tuner which the iPod lacks.
Zune also has bigger screen compared to iPod and it features changeable desktop wallpaper. On the other hand,
the edge of iPod over Zune is that it supports Audible audiobooks, podcasts, notes, tasks, calendars, contacts,
or games. Also, iPod has touch-sensitive scroll wheel, Apple’s iPod camera connector for importing photos
from digital cameras, and Nike.
Cost iPod vs Zune:
Zune and iPod cost almost the same. The Zune costs $250 while a comparable 30GB iPod
with video costs $249. Microsoft’s accessories are just as top priced as Apple’s; in fact,
the price ranges from $100 AV cables to a $30 dock; no discounts or competitive prices to be found anywhere.
Advantages iPod vs Zune:
One of the primary advantages of
Zune is that it offers subscription services to have
access to music. Also, Zune has horizontal display mode for better viewing purposes. In the side of iPod,
it has a store with larger music library and has movie and TV store. iPod got more support plus it’s
backed by iTunes which provides greater range in music,
TV, and movie purchases.
Disadvantages iPod vs Zune:
The drawback of the newly-released product of Microsoft Zune, is that it won’t
immediately have video playback capability unlike the established iPod. Also, in the feature of music sharing,
we can only share with other Zune users. But both these players don’t offer cinematic movie experience.
Almost the same products but different in names or manufacturers results to confusions and arguments in the
side of the users on which is better.
Comparisons are being made with iPod vs Zune. But in the end, the users
still get benefits in this competition. In order not to be outwitted by one another, the producers of these
products will improve their services continuously. Also, the cost will be decreased to promote their products
even more. If we want to cling on the current trend and on what was established, we’ll get an iPod of
course. But if we want to deviate and have something new and different, we can try the Zune. The rivalry
between the iPod and the Zune will continue and it’s up to us which side we will take.
